The Pontnewydd branch of the Royal British Legion is planning a centenary commemoration at the Pontnewydd War Memorial in spring 2026.
The event will mark 100 years since the memorial was first unveiled and will honour the 67 local men who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.
Preparations are already underway, with the committee meeting this month to begin planning. A provisional date in April has been suggested, with further details to be confirmed following a February meeting.
Names and records
In the lead-up to the event, volunteers have created a database of names and records from the memorial and compiled short biographies for each individual. These stories are being shared throughout the year on the anniversary of each person’s passing via the branch’s public Facebook group, Pontnewydd War Memorial.
The group hopes local residents will contribute any photographs or personal stories they may have about the soldiers, sailors and airmen listed. Work is also beginning to research other war memorials across Cwmbran.
