A Cwmbran author has written a book that explains infertility and egg donation to children.
Rhian Sage-Patil, from St Dials, is holding a book launch in Cwmbran Library on Saturday 6 December at 10am
She said: “The story is about a young girl named Lylah who wants a sibling, and her parents need to find ‘The Golden Egg’ to help her family grow. The book aims to help children understand these sometimes-difficult topics in a heartfelt and accessible way.”
The book has been written following her own experiences.
Rhian, 48, said: “The Golden Egg was inspired by my own journey through secondary infertility and the incredible gift of donor egg conception. When I searched for children’s stories that reflected this unique and beautiful way of building a family, I found very few that spoke with warmth, honesty, and love.
“I wanted to create something gentle, magical, and full of heart, something that helps children understand their beginnings with pride and joy, and helps parents feel seen and supported in sharing their story.
‘Struggle to conceive’
“I have spent a lot of my adult life travelling, so left it late to have a family. My first child happened naturally, and I had my daughter at age 39, then struggled for six years to conceive.
“I had a failed IVF cycle in Cardiff, and my doctor asked if I wanted to try donor eggs in Spain. It was a no-brainer. So we did IVF donor eggs in Spain, and thankfully, it worked for us the first time. We used my husband’s sperm.
“The ‘Golden Egg’ represents a special gift, a tiny spark of hope, given by someone with a kind heart to help a family grow. I focused on the love, care, and wish that brought the child into the world, rather than the science behind it.
“The story shows that families are made in many beautiful ways, but what matters most is the love that connects them. Through gentle words and imagery, I wanted children to feel cherished, wanted, and proud of their own unique story.”
