A former steward of Woodland Road Sports & Social Club says it’s the “end of an era” this weekend as the club closes its doors for the last time.

Steve Cooper is helping to organise a family Halloween party this evening to raise money for charity.

The club opened in the 1960s, but its last drinks will be served tomorrow- Saturday 1 November.

Steve and Margaret, his wife, held a Halloween street party last year outside their home in Croesyceiliog and raised money for Maggie’s, a cancer charity.

I met him this morning in the Woodland Road club after he returned from Velindre with his wife. He was there to help him family get the club ready for the party.

‘Maggie’s

He told Cwmbran Life: “Last year, we did it for Maggie’s and this year we’re doing it for Velindre, which is very close to me because that’s where I’m having treatment.

“We were going to do it up by our close where we had it last year but because of the weather being as it is, we came down to Woodland Road.

“They kindly allowed us to use their facilities, so hopefully we’ll have a big turnout tonight and raise a lot of money for Velindre.

“I was a steward here for about 11 and a half years, and prior to that I was deputy steward for about two years.

“It’s sad in one way and happy in another way. We’re going out with a bang.

‘End of an ara’

“It’s the end of an era. The club’s been here for a long time.”

The fundraising party is all evening. The club will reopen tomorrow as Croesyceiliog RFC are playing at home- and then last orders will ring for the last time later that evening.

Regulars or not-so-regulars are welcome to visit the club today or tomorrow.
