An eco-wellness retreat in Blaenavon is preparing to open in the coming months, following support from a council-run business startup programme.

The Retreat at Little Oaks, currently operating as holiday accommodation, will expand to include a sauna, ice bath, cabana and spa treatments. The development follows co-owner Andy Parfitt-Jones’s participation in the Torfaen Business Direct startup course earlier this year.

He said: “The course gave us the structure and confidence we needed to turn our vision for The Retreat at Little Oaks into a reality.

“The mix of expert guidance and peer support helped us refine our vision, strengthen our business plans and foundations, and push forward with opening a wellness eco-retreat that brings something truly unique to Blaenavon.”

Next business course

The next eight-week Business Startup Programme begins on Wednesday 18 September.

Organised by Torfaen Council’s Business Engagement Team and delivered by Welsh ICE, the free course is aimed at individuals considering starting a business or those recently self-employed.

Sessions will take place every Thursday morning at Croesyceiliog Community Education Centre in Cwmbran, covering topics such as branding, marketing, sales and finance. Industry experts and local entrepreneurs will also share insights.

Cllr Joanne Gauden, executive member for economy, skills and regeneration, said: “We know there is a wealth of untapped talent in the area, and this programme provides individuals with the guidance and support they need to turn their ideas into reality.

“Whether you have already made a start or just have an idea for a new business, we’re excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our local community.”

Hope Eckley, Welsh ICE academy manager, added: “We believe that with the right support, anyone can turn a great idea into a thriving business. The startup programme is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to take the first step toward making their entrepreneurial dreams a reality.”

The programme is part of the Business Support Project, which has received £218,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

A further startup course is planned for the New Year. For more information, residents can follow the team on Facebook, email [email protected] or call 01633 648735.
