A bike refurbishment initiative in Pontypool that supports young people not in education, employment or training has received £28,000 in funding.

Changing Gearz, based in Griffithstown, offers hands-on experience in repairing and refurbishing donated bicycles, helping participants aged 11 to 19 gain mechanical skills and work towards recognised qualifications.

The funding includes £10,000 from British Cycling’s Lloyds Bank Community Hubs scheme and £18,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund. Organisers say the money will be used to cover training costs and purchase spare parts, tools and equipment for the workshop.

Kevin Weaver, Torfaen Council’s youth service inspire programme transition officer, who leads the project, said: “This funding is a game-changer. It means we can continue to support young people with hands-on training, boost their confidence, and help them gain qualifications that open doors to future employment.

“It’s not just about bikes, it’s about building futures. This boost in funding will certainly lift the profile of Changing Gearz as a key provider of bicycles in the area.”

Since its launch in 2015, Changing Gearz has refurbished and redistributed hundreds of bikes across Torfaen. Some are donated to families in need, while others are sold at low cost.

Seventeen-year-old Tyler Preece, from Cwmbran, has been volunteering at the workshop since May.

He said: “Changing Gearz has given me the opportunity to become more confident around people and achieve qualifications in bike mechanics. Without it, I would be stuck around the house, not doing much.”

Tyler is now working towards a Velo Tech Professional qualification, an advanced cycle maintenance certification recognised by the Bicycle Association.

The funding announcement comes shortly after Pontypool hosted the Tour of Britain Men event, which organisers say has helped boost local interest in cycling and active travel.

Changing Gearz is currently looking for volunteer bike mechanics to support growing demand.

Members of the public can donate bicycles or request services by contacting the team at Unit 12, Panteg Industrial Estate, Griffithstown, NP4 5LX.
