A BID to allow a health and beauty retailer to operate from the former Carpetright store in Cwmbran is due to go before councillors.
An unidentified “multiple retailer” intends operating from the unit at Lockgate Retail Park, Cwmbran Drive which is some 250 to 300 metres from the boundary of the Cwmbran Centre.
The retail park was originally constructed to sell mainly bulky goods and a planning condition restricts the type of goods that can be sold to DIY, auto care, bicycle and car accessories, pets, pet food and accessories, furniture, carpets and floor coverings as well as household appliances and home furnishings.
One unit also has permission for the sale of clothing, footwear, toys and games, health/beauty/pharmaceutical goods, books, stationery and household goods such as glass and china, and other personal effects.
Other variations on the conditions at other units have also been granted in recent years.
Torfaen Borough Council’s planning committee is being advised to approve an application to amend the condition related to Unit 3A, the former Carpetright store that has been vacant since July 2024 to allow the potential operators to sell a wider range of goods than those covered by the existing condition at the unit that has a floor space of 690 square metres.
The planning agent for applicants RI BQ Stockport Limited has told the council the application has been made to “meet the requirements of a prospective tenant”.
A report for the committee states: “The agent has stated that the tenant is a multiple retailer who principally sells a range of health and beauty, personal care and pharmaceutical products / services.”
Councillors will consider the application for a planning permission for development without compliance with an existing condition at their Wednesday, August 20 meeting at the Civic Centre, Pontypool.
