An under-11s rugby team in Cwmbran searched their pitch for dog mess before playing a match.
Torfaen Tigers play on the fields opposite the Ashbridge Inn. Before today’s (Sunday 27 July 2025) match they and their opponents walked in lines across their pitch to find dog mess.
Each player stood still if they spotted any, and an adult came over to pick it. Dogs are banned from being exercised on any marked-out sports pitch in Torfaen.
Sophia Coia, a parent, said: “They turn up committed, passionate, and excited to represent their team, they shouldn’t have to start their game by picking through health hazards left by others.
“One photo shows nearly 15 players spread out across the field, each marking a pile of dog mess.
“A video shows both teams walking the pitch in a line, like a search team, not for a ball, but for faeces. This is not just disgusting – it’s DANGEROUS.
“Dog poo carries harmful bacteria and parasites like toxocariasis, which can cause serious illness and even permanent blindness in children. Our kids are diving, tackling, sliding on these fields.
“They should NOT have to worry about what they might land in. Who is responsible for maintaining and checking this pitch? Why is this happening week after week?
“And to local dog owners: clean up after your dogs. It’s not hard. It’s basic respect.”
