The manager of a Torfaen Council service that helps thousands of children get out and have fun through play has been given the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honour’s list.

Julian Davenne, the play services manager at Torfaen Council, has been awarded for services to young people.

Torfaen Play’s team of staff and volunteers run sessions in schools, after school, during the evenings, and weekends, along with their popular school holiday camps throughout the year. I

He told Cwmbran Life: “I was deeply honoured to receive the news yesterday that I have been awarded a BEM in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

“It’s been a true privilege to work with children and young people over the past 30 years; a role I have always loved and continue to enjoy just as much today.

“Supporting children and communities has been at the heart of everything I do, and none of it would have been possible without the unwavering support of my incredible team, and the many young people and dedicated volunteers, past and present, who give so much to our community.

“To receive this honour on such a beautiful day, while helping bring joy at a special event (Julian and the Play Team were at the Cwmbran Big Event yesterday) made it all the more meaningful.”
