The air ambulance was called out to Mynydd Maen above Cwmbran after a 17-year-old boy fell off his mountain bike.

Llewi Edwards was enjoying a day out cycling yesterday when he skidded through a puddle and ended up on the floor with his legs tangled in his bike. He fell near the ‘quarry’ above the town.

Two walkers came to his aid and called his mother, Kate. She drove to Henllys with her other son and the pair walked up with blankets. Ambulance paramedics drove up the steep lane near Henllys Village Nursery and walked the last few hundred metres.

Kate said: “The air ambulance arrived soon after. He was in shock and given gas and air while the bike was moved off him.”

He had no spinal injuries and his brother, paramedics and a passer-by carried him down to the ambulance and the helicopter took off for another job.

His mum said: “The staff at the Grange University Hospital were amazing. He was triaged and given an X-ray. Nothing was broken. He had a helmet on too which probably helped a lot.

“Big thanks to the two ladies, Ria and Suzi, who stayed with him until I got up there.

“I cannot praise the emergency services enough for what they did yesterday. He’s one lucky boy! He’s now banned from biking and it’s broken anyway now.”
