This wonderful photo was supplied by Kevin Fortey, from Cwmbran.
It was taken in the 1980s at the Mill Tavern pub (now closed). The winner was Kevin’s dad, Mike, who grew the 79kg (175lb) giant in the photo.
Kevin said: “The show moved to Cwmbran Workingmen’s Club as the venue had double doors so pumpkins weighing an average of 45kg-90kg (100-200lb) could be taken in and out with ease.”
Mike died in 1996 and Kevin and brother Gareth carried on their dad’s love of growing giant vegetables.
The pair have appeared on many TV programmes including BBC’s Gardeners World and Channel 5’s Cooking the Books.
