It’s 6pm on a Saturday evening. This is the time when millions of people are slumped in front of the telly getting ready for Strictly Come Dancing. But over in Northville a large group of residents are wrapped up in hats and gloves and chatting to each other in the dark.

The Northville Community Group are a great example of what happens when residents pull together to make their area a nicer place to live and look out for each other. In the last few days they have built a raised bed and planted a Christmas tree complete with lights. Some residents have added baubles with special messages to late friends and relatives. This is why instead of cheering for Debbie McGee I’m stood among the friendly residents with my hands wrapped around a warm mulled wine and carol singing waiting for the tree’s lights to be turned on.

Today the group’s bus trip to Cheltenham had to be cancelled because of the weather. They recently held a Halloween party in a local hall so the estate’s children didn’t have to go around trick or treating.

It was a lovely evening. If you hear people say ‘no-one knows their neighbours’ or ‘there is no such thing as community anymore’ take a look at what this group are doing.

A stall had been set up in the garden of the house next to the tree where volunteers from the group (which has its own constitution so it can apply for grants) were selling raffle tickets, mulled wine and sweets. All the money goes to the group’s fund to keep the cost of their events as low as possible for residents. Father Christmas appeared out the house and handed out selection boxes to the young residents.

One resident told me: “I wouldn’t live anywhere else if you paid me. This is my home and it’s the people that live here who make it my home.”

The group’s Facebook page makes me feel good inside. These are some of the posts from the last week 🙂 Residents share useful information and offer to help each other out.

Me and mike would like to say a massive thank you to all the ppl who help keep northville community alive and thank you for the flowers you really shouldn’t had we love helping out and don’t expect any reward for it outher than being part of a lovely community and seeing the hard work being enjoyed by outhers is enough for us x

Just had my mum on the telephone. She lives on Porth Mawr Rd – Asda end. A nice young woman has been there without being asked and cleared the snow from her path. I am guessing that it was one of your guys so would like to say thank you for her she appreciated that you thought of her.

Please take the time to check on vulnerable and elderly neighbours. We are here if assistance is required in an emergency. If you have elderly or vulnerable relatives in Northville but are unable to get here to help them please let us know and we’ll do our best to assist. Sooo how about an impromptu competition? Upload your Northvillian snowman photos for a chance to win the following prizes. 1st prize- voucher for water sports session at Bryn Bach park worth £40. 2nd and 3rd chocolates
