A HOUSING association has confirmed it intends to sell a former headquarters in Pontypool when it moves to a new city base.

Hedyn Homes has announced it is to create a single head office in Newport city centre at the former Royal Mail building on Mill Street.

The housing association, which manages 15,000 homes across five South East Wales local authority areas, was formed in 2025 through the merger of Newport City Homes and Melin Homes that was headquartered in Pontypool and worked across Torfaen as well as Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Powys.

The organisation, that employs 750 people, confirmed the decision means its office at Ty’r Felin in New Inn, at the A472 and A4042 roundabout, will close along with its existing base in Newport.

A spokeswoman said: “The consolidation means that we will either sell the offices we own, as is the case with the Pontypool office, or choose not to extend our lease as is the case with Nexus House.”

She confirmed there will be no redundancies as a result of the move to a single office, which is due to open by summer 2028 while the Pontypool office is to be listed for sale “in due course”.

Jonathon Martin, community councillor for New Inn on Pontypool Community Council, said he would be sorry to see the office close.

The Conservative councillor said: “I actually did my work experience there many years ago when it was called Melin Homes.

“Having that office there is good for the area as it gets footfall on to the canal and possibly into Pontypool town centre and New Inn.”

The community councillor said he hoped a new use can be found for the office, with Hedyn having occupied two buildings on the site near to the Harvester restaurant.

“I just hope they find a business to take it over as it is quite a lot of space but as long as everyone keeps their jobs that is good news and I hope another business can take it over but I suppose it’s the general churn you expect with corporate mergers.

“It would be a blow if it’s not taken over for many years.”

Hedyn said it “will continue to strengthen our presence in the other local authority areas we serve” but said but said it doesn’t advise tenants to report repairs at its offices in person, instead preferring emailing, ringing the call centre, text or social media, though support can be provided from its offices.

The spokeswoman said: “Residents will continue to see their housing support teams in the same way they do at the moment. We are committed to strengthening our presence in the local authority areas we serve.”
