*April Fools’ Day story* Hollywood-style sign to be built on the hill overlooking Cwmbran

This spoof story was published on Cwmbran Life on April Fools’ Day 2019. The Guardian included it in their round-up of funny stories from across the UK

Cwmbran is set to get a Hollywood-style sign on the hill overlooking the town. Giant white letters will be built on Myndd Maen to promote Cwmbran as a place to visit.

Torfaen Council’s planning committee approved the £10,000 plan, which was submitted by a group of business owners from the town.

The group of entrepreneurs want to attract attention to the excellent quality of life, transport links and value-for-money business units available in the town.

If more cash can be found they hope to fund lights so the 45ft high letters can be seen at night.

The application said that the landmark will be visible from the M4. Around 75,000 drivers a day will see the Cwmbran sign on their journey through the Newport stretch.

These artist’s impressions show what the signs will look like once they’re built. Work on the project is due to start this week and be completed by the end of April.
