A FORMER Christian centre in the heart of Pontypool could be converted to a two-bedroom home.
.A planning application has been submitted by Christian Williams, of Mamhilad, Pontypool, to Torfaen Borough Council seeking approval for the change of use from a Christian centre to a dwelling.
Information submitted with the application states that The Mount Christian Centre, which is next door to the now disused Mount Pleasant Methodist Church and within the town centre conservation area, was first built as a doctor’s surgery in the 1920s.
The single-storey building remained in use as a surgery until the late 1990s, when it became the Christian Centre, but closed at the end of 2024.
The planning application states it is intended to convert it with “the minimum amount of alteration” with the front to be reconfigured to form a living room and two bedrooms, and the back a kitchen and bathroom.
It is also proposed to insulate the building and replace its windows and doors, although the entrance will remain to the side.
The site has parking for between two and three vehicles, and the application states development “will not impair the free flow of traffic”.
There will also be wheelchair access, from the existing driveway, and ramps to the house, and all rooms will have doors wide enough for wheelchairs and there will also be an accessible toilet.
