A PETITION calling for the redevelopment of a 1960s shopping precinct has been presented to a council.

Campaigners want a share of a £20 million UK Government funding pot awarded to Cwmbran to be allocated to revitalising Fairwater Square.

It was built in the mid 1960s and is the largest neighbourhood shopping precinct in the new town that was developed from the 1950s.

Mark Ward-Jones presented the petition, on behalf of the Fairwater Square regeneration committee, to Torfaen Borough Council leader Anthony Hunt at the council’s July meeting..

It calls for the council, Bron Afon housing association, the Cwmbran Futures board which is responsible for identifying how to spend the £20m fund and is charied by cabinet member Councillor David Daniels, and other stakeholders to support the redevelopment.

The campaigners have identified improvements to lighting, security and environmental design as a way to address anti-social behaviour and for well maintained landscaping, seating areas and improved walkways.

They also want easier access for elderly and disabled people including smooth pathways and safe crossing points and improved public transport.

The petition also calls for modern affordable housing, while retaining amenities and ships including a pharmacy, and the establishment of a community hub that can host local events, workshops and services and support youth services.

The existing health centre, veterinary clinic and dental practice should also be integrated, according to the petition.

Mr Ward-Jones told councillors, who accepted the petition: “Fairwater Square has the potential to be a thriving community asset.”
