1918 poppies are being knitted by pupils at Croesyceiliog School and the 2nd Fairwater Guides.

Barbara Voisin,  a languages teacher at the school, wanted to make a garland of poppies. She spoke to Pritti Davies, a business teacher who is also the leader of 2nd Fairwater Guides, and together they decided to aim for 1918 poppies.

The school has a knitting club where pupils and teachers meet up twice a week to learn how to knit their own poppies. The members of 2nd Fairwater Guides offered their help as part of their Community Action Badge. Pupils and guides have also been knitting on their own at home.

Mrs Davies said: “The inspiration for this community project comes from Emily Clark. At her funeral we were reminded of her own words in which she said she did not want people to think of her as an inspiration unless they were actually inspired and motivated to do something positive as a result. Based on these Barbara said that she wanted to mark her 20th anniversary of living in Wales by knitting poppies; bringing the community together, young and old, novice and experienced knitters.

“As well as commemorating the Centenary of WW1 to mark our connection to Emily we are asking for a button to be sewn into the centre of each poppy. The poppies themselves are all unique and individual like each of us.”

The aim is to produce a wall display to go up in the community in November. The display will then move to the new Croesyceiliog School when it opens in 2019.

The group would love to get help with their challenge. If you want to knit a poppy and have it as part of the display please contact them through their @1918poppychallenge Facebook page.

The page features photos, tips and videos of the challenge.
