Northville has been given a stunning splash of colour. Thousands of wild flower seeds that were planted in June have come into bloom in and around Pontnewydd Walk.

Pupils from Maendy Primary School, local residents along with Bron Afon and Torfaen Council teamed up with Grow Wild to transform the estate and encourage bees and wildlife.

The volunteers of all ages spent the afternoon sowing seeds and their hard work can now be enjoyed by everyone.

Grow Wild is the UK’s biggest-ever wild flower campaign, bringing people together to transform local spaces with native, pollinator-friendly wild flowers and plants. Supported by the Big Lottery Fund, Grow Wild is the national outreach initiative of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

The Meadow Champions project is transforming 28 sites owned by Bron Afon with wild flowers.

Why are wild flowers so important?

The Grow Wild website explains: “Wild flowers provide vital food and shelter to pollinators including bees, helping to support the whole eco system. A simple act of sowing wild flowers really helps to bring wildlife into urban environments. A big thank you to everyone who helped out in Cwmbran.”
