VIDEO: Meet the former serviceman who has decorated his street in Cwmbran with poppies

Most of the 243 people who crossed the finish line at the Gwent Poppy Run last week just wanted to sit down and enjoy a nice cup of tea. But Graham Betty spotted a few large poppies around the course and wondered if they were still needed now the 10km obstacle race was over. He asked the organisers if he could have them and they said ‘yes’.

A Whats App group quickly spread the word

When he got home to Cwmbran the former serviceman put five or six poppies up on lampposts in Rosemead in Greenmeadow. His neighbours have a Whats App group and a few asked “where have these poppies come from? Can we have one?”

He spoke to the Royal British Legion in Risca and was able to collect a big pile of poppies for his neighbours who then made a donation to the Poppy Appeal. Now over 40 large poppies are on homes and lampposts in the street.

This post below on Cwmbran Life yesterday morning led to residents in other parts of Cwmbran asking to donate and have one of the large poppies.

Be The Best Military Fitness

Graham and his friend Adam Hughes run Be The Best Military Fitness and organise outdoor fitness classes across Torfaen. The members take part in the Gwent Poppy Run every year and help build the course.
