The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony is on Wednesday 4 April in the Gold Coast. A Cwmbran man is flying to Hong Kong this weekend and then to Australia as part of Guernsey’s team.

Simon Weaver, head coach at Torfaen Warriors amateur boxing club, has been taking his boxers to compete in Guernsey for the last five years. That link led to him being asked to be part of the coaching team to take the island’s only boxer to the games.

Simon said: “This is one of the biggest highlights and honours in my boxing career.  I will be representing my family, Torfaen Warriors and Guernsey. I would like to thank them again for giving me this opportunity. Hopefully all of our preparations are ready for Billy Le Poullain to achieve his dream, a medal.”
